Hey! I am Ross and I am responsible for all photography and content creation for our web and social platforms at Teenzshop. I also support Jordana (Founder) & Jo (Head of Digital) when it comes to product development and strategy as well as the digital marketing side of the business and graphic design, so I am a bit of a ‘jack of all trades’.
I am originally from Sydney , Australia - started in the industry as a model if u can believe it :). I also worked in hospitality from a very young age as it’s my family business, so before turning 25 I decided to give photography assisting a chance as a way to get out of hospitality. As much as I loved serving people, the hours are not the best. Working as a Photographers Assistant in Australia allowed me to travel the world and learn everything about the business and the things that photography tutorials won’t teach you :). After 5 years I decided to pack up and go backpacking around the world! Living in Berlin , Moscow, Paris, Barcelona and London documenting my travels and life, whilst learning everything the world has to offer. I moved to Los Angeles in 2013, out of luck winning the green card lottery and it’s been my home ever since. I have since built a strong portfolio in LA, mainly in Fashion and Commercial photography. I met Jordana in 2017 on a shoot and the rest is history!
We caught up with Ross on a quick Q&A. We hope you find enjoy it.
What is the best part of your job?
Working with a talented team all across the globe and being able to be involved in a business from the start! I have always showed a strong interest for commerce and am very entrepreneurial, so learning as much as I can about fashion manufacturing , e-commerce and digital marketing has been great.
Can you tell us the process you go through when planning a shoot?
First I start with an idea! They can come from anywhere really, a movie, a book , a song, a random quote or destination travelled. From there I start finding reference images and find this is a great starting point to expand on the idea. Plus it’s not where you take it from its where you take it too! Sometimes the planning part is the most exciting part as u get to dream up whatever you want! There is no such thing as a bad idea - but getting an image where you want is a different story.
Do you play any pranks on shoot?
I have been known to be pretty jovial on set and I do charge extra for jokes…. A fun shoot is a good shoot was one of the first lessons I learnt about photograph.
What kind of gear do you use?
I am a canon lad! Always have been always will be!
Who has influenced you the most?
Everyone I meet is a influence. I try to take a little lesson from everyone I come in contact with!
How do you choose your models?
I pick based of a models features. It can be an eye colour, a big smile, a scar, hair colour or even an imperfection. And Sometimes it’s a combination of all them.
How would you describe your photography style?
My fashion editorial work is probably more raw, and my commercial work is a fine mix between that and selling the product I’ve been hired to shoot! 9 out 10 times a client has a very strong idea on what they want and it’s my job as a commercial photographer to help them realise that vision! Maybe I would describe my style as “Flexible”.
What was the one thing you wished you knew when you started taking photos?
How expensive film processing and equipment is when your backpacking around the world living !! I definitely skipped a few meals so I can process rolls on the road!
